Don't confuse Breadcrumbs for Bids for Connection In relationships of any kind, whether romantic, friendship, or even professional, it’s easy to mistake breadcrumbs for genuine connection. Breadcrumbs are the small, inconsistent gestures someone throws your way to keep you around without offering the depth, consistency, or intimacy of true presence.
They look like quick texts after days of silence, vague promises without follow through, or just enough attention to keep you hoping for more.
Bids for connection, on the other hand, are intentional gestures that say “I want to connect with you.” They can be as simple as sending a funny meme, asking about your day, or reaching for your hand. Bids don’t have to be grand, they just have to be genuine, consistent, and pointing toward closeness.
The difference is this
A bid for connection builds a bridge.
A breadcrumb keeps you waiting on the other side.
So, what do you do when you start noticing distance and breadcrumbs?
1. Pause and get honest with yourself. Are you holding on to crumbs because you’re hoping they’ll turn into more?
2. Look at their actions, not just their words. Are they offering genuine bids, or just occasional crumbs?
3. Recognize the role of self-abandonment. Often, accepting breadcrumbs is a form of abandoning yourself wanting more but settling for less, hoping scraps will eventually add up to a meal. A secure person will not accept this. They’ll notice the change, name it, and clearly state that they want more.
4. Redirect your energy. Don’t chase crumbs. Respond to bids with openness, and seek out relationships where connection is reciprocal.
5. Hold your standard. Real connection requires consistency, vulnerability, and mutual investment. If it’s not there, don’t shrink your needs.. honor them.
Remember, breadcrumbs keep you hungry, but bids for connection nourish. Don’t abandon yourself, choose what feeds your heart, not what starves it.
Much Love,
David
